South of France Motorcycle Trip
To be honest, this European Vacation was never booked with the intention of being a South of France Motorcycle trip, it just thankfully turned into that. I went on a two week long trip which started in Barcelona, then to the South of France, Monte Carlo, and then all over Italy. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey, right? I went with my boyfriend of the time who happened to be an ex motor cross driver, so for me, I was just a passenger on the back of the bike enjoying the scenery. We didn’t have a plan of where we were going except for stopping in Monaco, which happened to be one of the many good spots that we hit. I would not go back to the South of France unless it involved riding a motorcycle to each city nearby. For me, sitting on a beach everyday is boring, and I need a little more adventure. Below are my favorite cities of the South of France Motorcycle Trip. I highly suggest doing this motorcycle trip starting off in Nice and ending somewhere in Italy, with or without a plan:
1. Nice, France
The South of France Motorcycle Trip started out in Nice, France. I spent two days in the city biking around. One of my favorite spots is Castle Hill where you can see a view of the whole port, city, and beach. The sunsets are amazing up there as well. Be sure to park and walk up the steps (there are about 300). You will need proper shoes for this. The beach is also nice to lay at in the afternoon. Remember, it is France, so all of the beaches are nude. Also, the beaches do not have sand, but large pebbles to trek on.
2. Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo is about a 15 minute drive from Nice. We ended up liking Monte Carlo so much that we cancelled our reservation in Nice to stay here for a night. There really isn’t that much to do here besides check out a few of the sights and eat in the amazing restaurants. You definitely need to check out the Monte Carlo Casino at night. It is really cool to walk around in and gamble if you please. We rode the bike up to the Prince’s Palace of Monaco as well during the day and caught the changing of the guards. If you have the funds to do so, then go to the Hotel Paris for a drink, or even dinner. It is a very stunning and luxurious hotel. The inside feels like a scene in a James Bond movie.
3. Roquebrune Cap Martin
Cap Martin was more or less a drive by town, but also very unique and beautiful. Monet actually painted a famous painting of this town, so it must be special, right? My favorite part about this town was stopping in a grocery store for meat and fresh cheese and having a small bottle of wine. Other than that we were off to Menton which is a larger city.
4. Menton, France
Just past Monte Carlo is a neat little town called Menton, also known as “the pearl of France”. We spent an hour or two at Palmes Beach, which is also pebbly like the beach in Nice, and great for relaxing. You definitely feel like you are in Europe spending time in this quaint little town. There is also some great boutique shopping here as well.
It was so much fun to see the sign telling us we had crossed over into Italy. At this point it really felt like a road trip. Ventimiglia is only a short distance from Menton. It is a very small city along the ocean and actually had a pretty large train station in the middle. We actually got a ticket here for driving on the wrong side of the road. I am not sure if we ever paid it! Anyways, there are amazing coffee shops and restaurants in this little town. I suggest parking and walking around Old Town. We went to La Meridiana for lunch (suggested by locals), but I suggest walking around and checking out the menus to see where you want to go.
The last stop of the journey was Sanremo, where we ended up staying for the night. I wanted to bike Pista Ciclabile Area 24, which is a 24 km track that use to be an old train route. We woke up the next day and rode the seaside route which is incredible. The trek can easily be done in a day and there are many bars to stop and see. The ride was never boring. I felt like I could go on for hours and enjoy every moment. We ended up making a day of it and stopping at different restaurants having a beer and trying out different Italian snacks.
